Fire Science & Engineering (FSE) is the official journal of Korean Institute of Fire Science & Engineering(KIFSE). The journal classifies research into the following main fields within the fire science and engineering:

  • · Detection and suppression system
  • · Evacuation and human behavior
  • · Fire safety design & management
  • · Assessment of fire risk
  • · Fire investigation
  • · Fire safety legislation
  • · Rescue and EMS
  • · Additional fields related to fire safety

Submissions from other fields of fire science and engineering, and from other areas within the fields above, are welcome. Papers are assessed only with regard to quality and their potential for fundamental and generic contribution to fire science and technology.

Submission of Manuscripts

The corresponding author is required to sign an Author’s check list and a Copyright transfer agreement on behalf of all authors during the submission process. The forms of Author’s check list and Copyright transfer agreement can be found via the journal or homepage of KIFSE.

Authorship and Ethical Issues

For the policies on the research and publication ethics not stated in this guide, international standards for editors and authors ( can be applied.

Types of Publication

Full length papers should be complete and authoritative accounts of work which have special significance, general interest and which are presented clearly and concisely. All papers should be classified into research paper and convergence paper.

Authors are requested to follow these introductions carefully to ensure that the review and publication of the article are swift and efficient. Manuscript will be returned to the authors if they are not presented according to these instructions.


All manuscripts are peer-reviewed by at least 3 anonymous reviewers selected by the editor. The corresponding author is notified as soon as possible of the editor’s decision to accept, reject, or request revision of manuscripts. When the final revised manuscript is completely acceptable according to the format and criteria of the FSE, it is scheduled for publication in the next available issue. Rejected papers will not be peer-reviewed again.

Revision of Manuscripts

A manuscript mailed back to the author for revision should be returned to the KIFSE editorial office within 30 days. Otherwise, it will be considered withdrawn and treated as a new manuscript when and if it is resubmitted.

Page Proofs

Galley proof along with the original manuscript are sent to the author who submitted the manuscript. The proof should be checked against the manuscript (in particular, all table, equations and formula) and returned to the FSE editorial board as soon as possible.

Publication Charge

The publication fee is ₩270,000 or ₩180,000 Won for a manuscript less than 6 pages with or without acknowledgement(s), respectively. If the manuscript exceeds 6 pages, then an extra charge of ₩40,000 or ₩50,000 per a page will be charged for additional pages for the manuscript of 7-8 pages or more than 9 pages, respectively.

There is an additional charge of ₩ 60,000 for the cost of reviewing and processing the manuscript. Authors will be invoiced by the society after the manuscript is published in the journal.

Preparation of manuscripts

General formatting

  • · A manuscript should be prepared using “manuscript template” provided by this Journal, and not be exceed 20 pages based on A4 size.
  • · A manuscript should in general be organized in the following order: title, name(s) of author(s) and his/her(their) complete affiliation(s) written in both Korean and English, abstracts written in both Korean and English, keywords written in English, introduction, main body of paper including figures and tables, conclusions, acknowledgements, reference and appendices.

Essential title page information

  • · Title: Concise and informative.
  • · Corresponding author should be marked using †. Ensure that e-mail address, telephone and fax number are provided in the lower left hand corner of the title page(example: Corresponding Author. E-mail:, TEL:+82-2-555- 2450, FAX:+82-2-3453-5855).
  • · Author names and affiliations: if there are two or more authors and different affiliations, marks such as *, **, *** can be used (example: So-Bang Kim*, So-Bang Park**, So-Bang Lee***, So-Bang Hwang†).


  • · A concise and factual abstract is required. The abstract written in Korean should not exceed 500 words. In addition, figures and tables should be avoided.
  • · The abstract written in English should not exceed 300 words and a maximum of 5 keywords should be pro- vided.

Main body of paper

  • · Unit: The SI system of units should be used throughout.
  • · Table: Number tables consecutively in accordance with their appearance in the text. All tables should be referred to in the text. (example: Table 1. Sizes Insulating Covers of Pole Transformer Bushings)
  • · Figure: All figures should be presented with high qual-ity when the figure size was reduced as 7 × 7 cm.
  • · Figure captions: Ensure that each illustration has a caption. A caption should comprise a brief title and be writ-ten in English. Also, each figure should be referred as ‘Figure ~’ in the text. (example: Figure 1. Surface changes of insulation cover by temperature.)


  • · All references cited in the text must appear in the References section, and all items in this section should be cited in the text as form of (1), (2), etc.
  • · References should be written in English.
  • · Follow the style shown by the examples below.
